The Story Behind the Shoot: Rebel by Lily B

There are certain clients you grow alongside.

Not because you’ve worked together once or twice, but because every few years you get the privilege of documenting the next chapter of something they’ve worked incredibly hard to build.

That’s exactly what this session with Rebel by Lily B felt like.

I’ve known Melanie for nearly fifteen years through a close friendship with her husband, and over the years I’ve photographed her brand through several different seasons of growth. This latest session wasn’t simply about updating headshots or creating fresh marketing content. It was about documenting a milestone—a beautiful new storefront that reflects how far her business has come.

More Than a Boutique

Rebel by Lily B was created with a simple mission: helping women feel supported, confident, and seen.

From lingerie and shapewear to thoughtfully selected clothing, every product in the boutique is chosen with intention. That same intention is visible throughout the space itself. Walking into the new storefront feels warm, welcoming, and unmistakably Melanie.

When you’ve poured years into building something, your environment becomes part of your story.

It deserved to be photographed that way.

Planning for a New Chapter

Because this wasn’t our first time working together, the planning process looked different than it might with a new client.

The trust was already there.

Rather than building a rigid shot list, we spent our planning call discussing where the images would live, what this new chapter represented, and how the content needed to support both photography and video.

Melanie also had a few creative ideas she wanted to bring to life—including a playful The Devil Wears Prada-inspired reel inside one of the dressing rooms. It ended up being one of the most memorable moments of the entire day and perfectly reflected her personality.

Sometimes the best ideas come from giving creativity room to breathe.

Photographing Confidence

From the beginning, I knew these images needed to communicate one thing:

Growth.

Melanie chose a tailored suit instead of a traditional boutique outfit, and that immediately shifted my creative approach. Rather than focusing solely on products, I wanted the photographs to communicate leadership.

This wasn’t just someone selling clothing.

This was a business owner stepping confidently into her next chapter.

One of my favorite images came from the front counter beneath the illuminated Rebel by Lily B logo. That space naturally draws customers the moment they walk in, and it felt like the perfect place to capture the face behind the business. The clean lines of the store, soft lighting, and warm wood textures all worked together to create an image that feels polished without losing its personality.

Throughout the session I relied heavily on my Canon RF 24–70mm f/2.8—one of my favorite lens for brand sessions. It allowed me to move effortlessly from environmental portraits that showcased the entire storefront to tighter portraits that kept Melanie as the unmistakable focal point.

Every decision served the same purpose:

Make viewers feel like they’d already stepped inside the boutique.

The Story Behind One Photograph

My favorite image from the day wasn’t actually one of the polished portraits.

It was the one that showed Melanie standing beside her design materials, surrounded by fabric swatches, handwritten notes, and the creative process that most customers never get to see.

That photograph quietly tells the truth behind every successful business.

This brand wasn’t bought.

It was built.

Seeing those notes reminded me just how hands-on Melanie is. Every decision, every fabric, every detail has been carefully considered. Those behind-the-scenes moments are often invisible to customers, but they’re exactly what make a business feel authentic.

Sometimes the most important photograph isn’t the one with the biggest smile.

It’s the one that tells people why the business exists in the first place.

Why These Stories Matter

One of the things I love most about working with returning clients is getting to witness their evolution.

New spaces.

New products.

New ideas.

New confidence.

As photographers, we often talk about documenting milestones in people’s personal lives. But businesses have milestones too.

A new storefront represents years of late nights, difficult decisions, risks, and perseverance. Those moments deserve to be documented just as thoughtfully.

That’s why I love creating imagery for businesses like Rebel by Lily B.

Beautiful photographs certainly matter, but the real goal is helping people understand the story behind the brand.

Because every business worth building is also a story worth telling.
